President’s Message

It all started in a small office on Fillmore and Haight over 50 years ago. My grandmother, HSM founder Bertha Edwards Flemming, opened Haight Street Mortgage from which she provided loans with easy terms and conditions to residents who deserved consideration but were not able to secure reasonable terms from more conventional lenders. Many working class and elderly residents were able to keep their property because she was able to provide them with financing. She credited each of her parents for her work ethic, her confidence and for her belief in herself and every American’s indisputable right to earn enough money to have a comfortable life and attain the American dream of owning a home. Bertha credited her mother with putting together her first deal when she earned her real estate Broker license. The family purchased three apartment buildings on California Street near Presidio Street in San Francisco where most of Bertha’s siblings lived as they started their own families. That day you might say, was the start of something big.

Our company has achieved phenomenal growth and success over the past decades, and it all sprang from her simple philosophy of “Take care of your clients” “Be Honest”, and “Don’t Be Greedy and profits will follow. “

This philosophy, along with our employee’s drive to be the best has been the key to the survival and success of our company.
